The film 'File No 323', starring
Suniel Shetty and
Anurag Kashyap, directed by Karthik K, was news in the Hindi entertainment world when
Mehul Choksi, a fugitive businessman, sent a legal notice to its makers. Choksi alleged that the film, inspired by the lives of India's financial fugitives like
Vijay Mallya and
Nirav Modi, defamed him by linking him to these economic offenders.
In November 2022, Choksi's lawyer, Ayush Jindal, issued a Cease and Desist notice to the producers and director, claiming that articles about the film were harming Choksi's reputation. The notice demanded that the filmmakers stop production and issue a public apology within 72 hours.
However, during an interview with Etimes the producers, Kalol Das and Parth Rawal, maintained that their film would not specifically reference Choksi or malign his image. Instead, they planned to present a story based on publicly available facts about economic offenders.
Parth Raval said, "People who have looted money of common Indian people and are absconding from the Indian government and authorities and are hiding in foreign countries are issuing us a notice. We are going to present a story based on facts available in the public domain. Our film is not going to malign anyone's image, it is going to present well-researched facts and information about economic offenders."
The producers were confident in their approach, asserting that they were not making a biopic on Choksi or other fugitives but rather telling a story about those involved in economic crimes against the common people.
Kalol Das also shared his thoughts, "He (Mehul Choksi) has sent a notice that we have tarnished his image, but he was the one who tarnished his own image. We are only recreating information available in the public domain. We are not making a biopic on Mehul Choksi or Vijay Mallya or Nirav Modi. We are going to tell a story about people who are involved in economic offences against the common people of India."
At the time, Suniel Shetty expressed amusement at the notice, stating that the whole situation was "funny" given that the film was based on public domain information.
As of now, 'File No 323' has not yet been released. Mehul Choksi was arrested in Belgium on April 12, 2025. The arrest was made at the request of Indian agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), following non-bailable warrants issued by Mumbai courts.
