Viresh Borkar raises objections to Bambolim beach construction, seeks action from SEIAA

Panaji: St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar has written to the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) voicing his objections against the construction of a retaining wall on Bambolim beach by Hyatt Resorts and the construction undertaken by Worldwide Resorts and Entertainment Pvt Ltd.
Borkar asked the SEIAA to revoke all permissions for the project. The authorities already issued a stop work order for the retaining wall on the beach.
“To the best of my knowledge, the SEIAA has not yet granted environmental clearance (EC) for the two projects. It is noted that the project proponent commenced work without any EC granted by the SEIAA. It is beyond understanding and acceptance as to how a project can commence construction without all approvals from the various authorities (especially the Goa SEIAA) and continue with the project causing irreparable damage to the environment,” said Borkar.
He said that Hyatt Resorts clearly violated Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms while a portion of a hill was cut by Worldwide Resorts & Entertainment.
He demanded that the SEIAA clarify its stand on the retaining wall and the construction being taken up by Worldwide Resorts and Entertainment Pvt Ltd.
“At the outset, I demand that the matter be reverted to the state expert appraisal committee (SEAC) for revision of their recommendation. I alternatively request participation in the meeting of SEIAA when the matter of EC for the projects will be taken up for consideration,” said Borkar.
“The action and recommendation of SEAC is a clear indicator of either criminal negligence or corruption of the expert committee,” Borkar said.
